Update or Rollback to Avoid Bugs in Microsoft Windows 10

Two bugs in recent updates to Microsoft Windows 10 cause Visual Studio to crash when certain extensions, including Visual Assist, are installed. Microsoft fixed one of the bugs, a broken hook mechanism, in its November 14, 2017, update. Microsoft acknowledged that the second bug, which causes CreateWindowEx() to fail, exists in Windows 10 (64-bit) Fall Creators Update (Version 1709). Microsoft purportedly will fix the second bug in a December 12th update.

If you run Windows 10 and you have not installed the Fall Creators Update:

  1. Defer installation of the Fall Creators Update.
  2. Install the November 14th update to version 1703.
  3. Wait for a December 12th update from Microsoft before installing the Fall Creators Update.

If you run Windows 10 and you installed the Fall Creators Update in the last ten days:

  1. Rollback to the previous version of Windows, if possible.
  2. Defer installation of the Fall Creators Update.
  3. Install the November 14th update to version 1703.
  4. Wait for a December 12th update from Microsoft before installing the Fall Creators Update.

If you run Windows 10, you installed the Fall Creators Update, and you cannot rollback:

  1. Install the November 14th update to version 1709.
  2. Install Visual Assist build 2238, which mitigates CreateWindowEx() failures for some users.
  3. If Visual Studio crashes and you are part of the Windows Insider Program, install Build 17046, which purportedly fixes CreateWindowEx().
  4. If Visual Studio crashes and you are not part of the program, disable Visual Assist and wait for a December 12th update from Microsoft before resuming normal use of Visual Assist.
